Oliver Dean, who works at Hutcheon and Pearce in Cowra and is studying a Certificate III in Automotive at TAFE NSW Wagga Wagga, was given the opportunity of a lifetime last weekend - undertaking work experience at Australia's biggest race.
Oliver was one of 12 NSW TAFE students selected to take part in the experience, where he worked with the Monster Energy/Tickford Racing Team.
Throughout the course of the four day event, Oliver worked alongside pit crew and engineers on Car #6, the Monster Energy entry driven by runners up Cam Waters and Will Davison and assisted with the Supercheap Auto Car #55.
Oliver said it was an incredible opportunity to get a look behind the scenes.
"We did the practice runs, that's when the car would do a few laps and then they would pull back into the garage," he said.
"[We] would help the mechanics change the suspension, remove tyres and switch them around and drop the PSI in the tyres, change the angle on the wing, just try and get the required specs.
"On the race day, we'd run the tyres down to the tyre shed, get the Dunlop boys to put some new treads on it and run it back, do a few fuel stops and fill up the fuel tanks.
"I've always wondered how it did actually work and it's unreal."
After completing his work experience, the Monster Energy team were so impressed with Oliver's skills that they have offered him possible employment once he finishes his studies.
But Oliver says he will have to think about it.
"They said that, once we finish our apprenticeship and TAFE, give them a ring and talk about it," he said.
"I'm not sure, there's a bit to it,
"It's a bit full on and you're away from your home for big part of the year, which would be hard, I would have to think about it."
