The ride-sharing giant was originally going to be rolled out in April however social distancing rules, travel restrictions and self-isolation put a stop on all plans.

Uber Australia General Manager, Dom Taylor said with restrictions now easing, the need to support domestic travel is more important than ever.

"It might be a little later than we originally planned, but we're thrilled to be on our way," he said.

"Over the first two months of 2020, tens of thousands of domestic tourists from 35 places around Australia, used the Uber app to get around the parts of regional NSW we already cover.

"So we know the demand from tourists to explore our regional areas with Uber is there.

"And with drivers across regional NSW already expressing interest in driving with Uber before COVID-19 got in the way, we're more excited than ever to bring flexible, on-demand transport to the entire state."

Anyone in NSW can sign up to be driver right now before the app is switched on for riders.

"This will make NSW one of the largest geographic areas we serve anywhere in the world," Mr Taylor said.

Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism and Transport Forum, Margy Osmond, said their research shows that two in five Australians are planning to travel within their own state in the next two months, increasing to almost two thirds within the next six months.

"Our hope is that with restrictions lifting we'll see a real renaissance in domestic tourism, and I applaud Uber for doing everything they can to help that vision become a reality," she said.

"After droughts, bushfires, and a global pandemic - there's never been a better time for tourists to get out and #LoveNSW. And with pubs and clubs now reopen after a tough few months, it's a good time to visit your local, leave the car at home, and get a ride with Uber to get you home," Mr Taylor said.
