The Target stores that will close and those that will turn into Kmart revealed

Regional Target stores fare the worst of the the 284-store network under changes the business' owner Wesfarmer has outlined but the Cowra store will remain open.

Following the announcement from Wesfarmers on Friday morning in relation to Target stores across Australia, Cowra Shire Council made contact with Target management.

The response from Target is that the Cowra store is not impacted by the announcement and will continue to operate under the Target banner.

The company says it will convert 10 to 40 Target stores and 52 Country Target stores in regional areas to Kmart stores. It will also close 10 to 25 large format stores and 50 small format Target Country stores.

In all, between 122 and 167 locations will either be converted or shut, accompanied by a significant reduction in Target's store support office.

"We understand these closures will affect a lot of people in the Target community and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these challenging times," Target said in a message to customers.

"We are committed to providing every opportunity for redeployment for our team members who will be affected by these changes.

"We are proud to have a rich history as an Australian company and we are committed to serving you, our valued customers, now and into the future. "

The changes to Target stores will mostly happen in 2021.
