"If they practice properly, they'll play properly when they get out in the middle," the legendary cricketer told the Cowra Guardian.
"I just had a yarn to them and told them a few things there and hopefully now they'll try and do what I told them."
Walters was on a whirlwind tour of the Central West, running junior workshops and visiting bowling clubs, and stopped into Cowra on Wednesday afternoon to share some tips with the youngsters before a twilight event at the Cowra Bowling Club.
The 74-year-old, who grew up in the country himself, made no secret of his fondness for regional folk during his brief interview.
"They've got time to talk you, haven't they? The city people are a bit different," he remarked.
Walters, who was in West Wyalong the day prior, said he was pleased to see a strong junior cohort present for his hour long session.
"They're the future cricketers and it's great to see that cricket is still being played in Cowra. There's a lot of country towns where sport in general is not being played, particularly cricket."
Walters played 72 matches for Australia between 1965 and 1981, averaging 48.26 runs with the bat.
