Neville Pengilly was the speaker of the Member behind the Badge. He gave a very interesting talk about the changes he had seen in his life.
Our guest speaker was Matthew Rush who is the facility manager of the Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre Australia.
With 30 years of experience as a gardener, Matthew has been working at the Japanese Garden for 13 years.
The garden covers five hectares, three hectares of lawn and two hectares of garden.
They have 124 different plants to care for.
Matthew told us of some of the projects that are planned and have been completed to improve the garden's facilities.
These were the construction of a new storeroom and toilets, a complete rebuild of the old bonsai house and roof replacement of the cultural centre.
He also told us about the chrysanthemum planting, different pruning methods, Tamamono pruning and Okarikomi style pruning.
Watering of the garden is done by irrigation with 350 sprinkler heads connected to 24 irrigation stations.
They have to care for the nutrition of the lawns and plants as well as the filtration of the lake.
They do all this with three full time staff, two part time staff and one volunteer who do a magnificent job to keep the garden in a very attractive condition.
Everyone who attended the Andre Rieu Maastricht Concert had a very enjoyable time.
