Why 535? What does this number mean? A UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) report from late 2016 found that 535 million children (one quarter of the world's children) live in conflict or disaster stricken countries.
These children are impacted by war, natural disasters and climate change. They often have no access to medical care, quality education, proper nutrition or protection.
Statistics like the 535 million number are a stark reminder of just how lucky we are to live in a country like Australia.
If every community in the lucky countries around the world does something to help these children, we can make a difference. If we all sit back and say it is too hard or the numbers are just too big, then we won't make a difference.
Last year, St Raphael's Catholic Parish decided to host a dinner to raise funds to send to the charity Caritas to help these at risk and disadvantaged children.
Funds were raised from ticket sales ($30 each to attend) and from raffles and other entertainment during the dinner. The initial 535 dinner raised more than $5000 for this very worthy cause.
So we are going to give everyone the chance to have some more fun by having a second 535 dinner.
As was done last year, rather than sponsoring a child or children, St Raphael's has decided to use the funds raised to help the women in these underprivileged communities to stay healthy and to get an education.
Helping the women in this way has flow on effects for their family and for their community.
The catch cry is Educate Women and Change The World.
The dinner will be a very simple meal - it doesn't feel right to have a fantastic gourmet meal when 535 million children around the world are lucky to get anything to eat.
Having a simpler meal also reduces the cost of the dinner so that we can send more money to these affected countries and communities.
Tickets can be purchased from St Raphael's Presbytery, Ray White Cowra and Raine and Horne Cowra.
If you have any questions, please call the Parish Secretary on 6342 1369.
It is a very worthwhile cause so we strongly encourage you to come along and bring as many of your family and friends as you can.
You certainly don't need to be Catholic or a regular churchgoer to come along - everyone is welcome.
