With those words from councillor Ray Walsh Cowra Shire Council last week agreed to help fund a legacy project for the 75th anniversary of the Cowra Prisoner of War breakout in August this year.
Council is contributing $8172 to the project.
For each of the major anniversaries of the breakout over the last 15 to 20 years the Breakout Committee has constructed a legacy item as a special reminder of those events.
This year's project will see the images of an Australian guard, a Japanese POW, an Italian POW and an Indonesian mother and child laser cut into 2400mm high steel sheets installed at the POW campsite.
The Breakout committee is contributing $3000, Cowra Lions $4000 and the Australian Lions Foundation $4000.
"What happened is the reason why we have the Japanese Garden, the reason why there is the war cemetery, the reason why we have the peace bell and the various exchanges that take place with Japan," Cr Walsh said.
"This makes Cowra a very special place in the hearts of the Japanese and is something we should be proud of," he said.
The project was designed by Cowra Shire staff member Dean Steward and the laser cutting completed by Cowra company Chernco.
