The logo was revealed at a launch at Cowra Council chambers on Friday night. 

Graham Apthorpe, from the Cowra Breakout Association, said it was tough for the Committee to come up with a logo fitting of the milestone. 

“We really wanted something striking, we wanted something significant, we wanted to appeal to both Australian and Japanese audiences and we were challenged by the reality of a tragedy but as well as that, the good that has resulted from that event,” he said. 

“We spoke about the shapes and symbols associated with both countries.” 

The logo, created by Karly Morris, comprises of an outline of the Prisoner of War (POW) Camp, the Southern Cross, an origami crane and font associated with the Art Deco movement of the 1940s. 

Along with the logo, the anniversary’s Facebook page was launched by Lusi and Stassi Austin and the audience were shown commemorative memorabilia including mugs and beanies. 

A program of events to mark the anniversary was also announced, with 1940s themed activities to be held from Friday, August 2 until Monday, August 5. 

Friday, August 2: 

6:30pm: Cowra POW Breakout 75^th anniversary exhibitions: Cowra 75: From Guns to Garden at Cowra Regional Art Gallery. (Exhibition open to the public from August 2 to 18) 

Saturday, August 3 – 1940s theme day

9am to 12pm: Kendal Street businesses decorated in 1940s theme. Parade of pipe band, antique military vehicle and 1940s private vehicles from Bartlett Street through Kendal Street and Macquarie St en route to Twigg Oval. 

12pm to 4pm: The 1940s – Display of historic military vehicles (location tbc), stall holders and displays with a 1940s theme, 1940s style entertainment from local performers, dance groups, Art Deco lecture with Council's Heritage Advisor, Pop Up Museum in Nguluway Room, including Lithgow Small Arms Factory, Edgells Cannery display, Italian POW display, social life in Cowra and many more. 

6:30pm – 1940s style swing dance at Masonic Lodge, Macquarie Street

Sunday, August 4 – 1940s theme day

9am – Ecumenical church service at Salvation Army 

10am till 4pm – Guided tours of POW Camp Site. 

3.30pm – World Peace Bell Ceremony. Concludes with the departure of lone runner with lantern from Peace Bell to Cowra Japanese Garden carpark. 

5pm – Children and families to gather at Japanese Garden carpark. Departure of lantern parade from Japanese Garden carpark to POW Camp site via Sakura Avenue. 

6pm till 7pm – Breakout commemorative event at POW Camp site. Fly-over by RAAF FA-18 Hornet (TBC) 

7pm – Breakout 75^th anniversary dinner, hosted by Mayor and guest speaker (TBC) at the Cowra Services Club. 

Monday, August 5 – 75^th anniversary commemorations

1.50am – Commemorative event at Cowra POW Camp site

7.30am – Media breakfast at Cowra Japanese Garden 

9am – Wreath laying Cowra POW Camp site

10am – Wreath laying at Australian and Japanese War cemeteries 

11.30am – Breakout 75^th anniversary morning tea at Cowra Japanese Garden

1pm – Breakout 75^th anniversary luncheon – invitation only and venue TBC
