NSW Police say the man disappeared underwater at Oura Beach Reserve, along the Murrumbidgee River, about 1pm on Monday and didn't resurface.
PolAir and local officers quickly began searching with the assistance of the NSW SES before police divers arrived.
They resumed the search at 8.30am on Tuesday morning.
"We'll be scouring both the river banks a few kilometres downstream," Inspector Adrian Telfer told the ABC.
"Police divers will be under the water and doing their best to locate this gentleman."
Concerned locals took to Facebook on Monday noting it was exactly a year to the day that a 28-year-old man drowned during an evening swim in the same river at Wagga Wagga.
The father-of-five's body was found four days later in 2018 some two kilometres from where he was last seen.
