Emergency services were called to a car park on Bellevue Hill just before 6am on Friday morning to find the vehicle alight and black smoke billowing onto Binni Creek Road.
Cowra firefighters were quick to extinguish the blaze before it affected nearby vegetation.
Acting Sergeant Wayne Wiegold of Cowra Police said the vehicle was stolen from a Redfern Street business the night before.
“It was stolen some time overnight from Hertz, it was a rental car,” Sergeant Wiegold said.
“It was found burnt out just before 6am, the car was destroyed and investigations are continuing.”
This incident follows two cars being stolen on January 13, one in Cowra and one in Canowindra.
The Cowra incident involved a Toyota Tarago being stolen and located later in Orange.
Police are awaiting fingerprint analysis from the Tarago.
The car stolen from Canowindra was a small, white Toyota and police have not yet located the vehicle.
Acting Sergeant Wiegold said numerous incidents of vehicle thefts tends to happen in a short timeframe before it drops off once again
“We have waves of it,” Sergeant Wiegold said.
Regardless of how many incidents are taking place, Acting Sergeant Wiegold said residents need to be vigilant about their vehicles.
“People need to lock their cars and not leave their keys in them,” Sergeant Wiegold said.
“Vehicles need to be secure.”
Acting Sergeant Wiegold said very few vehicle thefts are the result of break and enters, rather most occur because people leave cars and garages unlocked.
“Some are the result of break and enters, but very few,” he said.
“People need to be vigilant.”
