With summer well and truly here there is nothing better than hitting the water for some fun and relaxation. Whether it is travelling to your favourite beach or finding that perfect spot along a river, water sports offer something for everyone to enjoy no matter your age or budget. Location is key to the kind of sports you can enjoy so make sure you find out what is available at your destination before you jump in the car and head off. No matter what activity you undertake, remember safety is vital so ensure you have any equipment needed such as life jackets, helmets, spare fuel, water, beacons and of course sunscreen.
While budget can obviously influence your choices, by booking early, using gift vouchers or visiting outside of peak times, more expensive or time hungry sports can be enjoyed by everyone. If you’re lucky enough to live near the beach, or are heading off to the coast for your holidays, then there is a never ending list of water sports for you to try.
Snorkeling is a great way to spend time in the ocean, relaxing in the warm salt water. Australia is celebrated worldwide for its amazing underwater ecosystems, with a wide variety of coral, reefs, fish and other aquatic life. Snorkeling is fun for the whole family, easy to organise and can result in some amazing underwater photos.
If you’re after more of a challenge then surfing is a top way to test yourself with balance, strength and timing key to mastering this popular pastime. Boogie boards are a great alternative to surfboards and can help fill the skill gap between a keen surfer and someone just looking to catch some waves.

For fresh water enthusiasts there is no shortage of options either. The calmer waters of rivers and lakes are an ideal place to jump on a set of skis. Gliding across the water at speed with the wind in your face is a wonderful feeling and something everyone should try once.
Wake boards are also very popular, and like snow boarding, are really developing a culture of their own complete with complicated tricks and big air jumps. For something a bit easier, but no less fun, ski biscuits are brilliant for smaller kids or even adults to just sit back and enjoy the ride. While skiing and wake boarding can be difficult to master at first, cable ski parks are becoming increasingly popular to help build the confidence and skills needed, and they are also very cost effective.
While there is always crossover between salt water and fresh water sports one of the most popular is fishing. It’s easy and cheap to participate and is not restricted by age or skills level. While there will always be debate about whether fishing is relaxing or frustrating, it is yet another one of the many ways you can spend your time on the water.
