At 10am, a ceremony was conducted by the Cowra Breakout Association and Australian Chapter of the World Peace Bell Association. 

Cowra Deputy Mayor, Councillor Judi Smith, said Remembrance Day is a significant event to remember those who died or suffered in all wars and conflicts. 

“This year is of even greater significance as we commemorate a Centenary of Armistice,” Cr Smith said.

Chair of the Australian Chapter of the World Peace Bell Association, Ian Brown, said it was symbolic to commemorate the end of the war to end all wars at the Peace Bell. 

“We come together today to honour their spirit and to remember them and the need for vigilance in order to uphold human dignity and to strive for world peace,” he said.

“We come to this symbolic peace and time to toll this bell of peace to send a message of peace and goodwill and to acknowledge that human rights are everyone’s rights and to bring about world friendship and international understanding. 

At 5pm on Sunday, Cowra took part in a worldwide bagpipe performance as members of the  Orange Regional Conservatorium Pipers played The Battle’s O’er to mark 100 years of Armistice.

Cr Smith said the performance coincided with pipers across the world. 

“Australia’s participation in the international commemoration is being coordinated by Pipe Bands Australia,” she said. 

“And is timed to coincide with pipers in Britain and across Europe... at the time the Armistice was signed.”
