More than two decades ago the townspeople of Boorowa began a tradition that was set to capture the curiosity and imagination of people across western NSW.
Renowned across the world for the production of fine Merino wool, Boorowa seized the opportunity in the late 1990s to showcase what the region could offer and created a wool week event which incorporated wool shows, wool workshops and shearing displays.
The event has continued to grow and is now a wonderful festival of family fun, as well as a celebration of all things wool – with a dose of Irish charm thrown in for good measure.
Run across three days – Friday, September 28 to Sunday, September 30 – there will be a range of unique and interesting entertainment, stalls and displays to keep the whole family enthralled.
The complete program of events can be found at the event’s website (Boorowa Irish Woolfest, irishwoolfest.com.au), but here is small sample of what visitors can enjoy.
Inaugural fireworks: Woolfest will go off with a bang on Saturday, September 29, with entertainment from 6pm featuring Josh Maynard, Gar MacLeman and Russell Churcher. Bring your family, chairs and a picnic and enjoy the fireworks from 8pm.
Drag racing for dogs: The sport of flyball is like drag racing for dogs. It takes the average backyard dog, and places them in a team with fellow doggy mates to run against other doggy mates in a relay race.
Shearing Shack: In a display of sheer skill, Boorowa’s gun shearers will demonstrate their abilities throughout the day, as a top shearer explains the techniques.
Boutique markets: Browse through an amazing variety of creative stalls which offer a wide variety of boutique products.
