Students from across the region will have the opportunity to take part in forums, workshops and hear from guest speakers from 9.30am until 3pm.
Chairperson of the Australian Chapter of the World Peace Bell Association, Ian Brown, said this year’s forum was significant as 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“The theme this year is “Human Rights – Everyone’s Rights”, a stunning statement and a universal challenge,” he said.
“We will, throughout the day, seek to understand the dilemma and dimension of human rights violation and later in the day, seek to find a path to peace.”
Students will have the opportunity to hear from some of the country’s leaders in peace advocacy, including Patricia Garcia A.O, National Information Officer with United Nations Informations Centres Canberra, Julia Dean and Regional Director of Amnesty International, Bede Carmody.
Ms Garcia has spent the past 20 years working in war zones, managing and coordinating humanitarian relief and development programs to assist refugees.
There will also be two workshops held during the day with a focus on human rights and advocacy.
The annual Peace Bell Ceremony will take place at 12.45pm on the day.
Students will also have the chance to enter the “My Path to Peace” Youth Speech Competition.
The competition will allow students to address an issue surrounding the topic of “My Path to Peace” in a setting of their choosing, whether it be domestically, the school yard, town, nationally or on the world stage.
Three winners will be selected to go onto the 2018 Rotary World Peace Day Dinner at the Cowra Bowling Club that evening to read their speeches for the audience.
Dinner attendees will then select a winner, who will receive a trophy and $300 in prize money, with second place receiving $200 and $100 to third.
The deadline for entries is today, Tuesday, September 11 at 4.30pm.
For more information about the competition, please contact Linda Barron on 6340 2064.
Tickets for the Peace Day Dinner are still available for $25 from Compleat Angler.
