David Cupitt, 26, of Hartley Street entered a guilty plea when he appeared in Cowra Local Court on September 5 charged with destroying or damaging property.
Solicitor Mr Johnson told the court his client’s action arose because Cupitt was owed money by a person he had done some work for.
“The defendant had no money whatsoever and he was chasing the money owed to him.
“The person, he tells me, was playing ducks and drakes but ultimately gave him a cheque and the cheque was signed and it wasn’t the correct signature,” Mr Johnson said.
“The defendant took the cheque to the bank to get some money to feed his family and the bank told him the bank wasn’t valid.
“What the defendant did then was a criminal act, not in anger but more in frustration he kicked the door of the bank and consequently caused $485 worth of damage to the bank doors,” Mr Johnson said.
Convicting Cupitt of the offence, magistrate Michael O’Brien imposed a $200 fine and ordered he pay compensation of $485 noting he had a similar matter on his record.
“One would’ve thought you’d mature with age and improve your outlook,” Mr O’Brien told Cupitt who attempted to cash the cheque at a Cowra bank on July 5 this year.
Police facts presented to the court reveal Cupitt became verbally abusive to bank staff when he was told the cheque had not been signed off.
Police say he left before returning a short time later again attempting to cash the cheque.
When he was told again that it had not been signed off he exited via the bank’s sliding glass door, kicking it, causing it to flex and an upper panel to crack.
His actions were captured on CCTV.
When spoken to he told police he kicked the door as he stepped forward in his haste to leave the bank.
