If you or your children have attended Cowra Public School since the early 2000’s, Mr Albert Murray would be a familiar face. Whether it’s in the classroom or out on the footy field, Albert has proven to give it his all in whatever passion he is pursuing.
Growing up in Cowra, Albert quickly found himself lacing up his boots for both the junior and senior Cowra Magpies sides.
“I played for Cowra through Juniors up to first grade,” he said.
He said there were a number of highlights from his footy days in the 1990’s, but one stands out above the others.
“Winning the 1992 and 1995 Group 10 First Grade Grand Finals for Cowra Magpies. Captaining Western Division to a Country Championship in 1996,” he said.
“Definitely the Group 10 Grand Final, Cowra went crazy for a few days after.”
After footy, Albert found himself heading down a completely different path – teaching.
“It has impacted greatly, particularly with me being a teacher. I’ve developed close ties with many families in our community which enables me to provide the best social and educational opportunities for the children that I teach,” he said.
He has since been appointed Assistant Principal of Cowra Public School, which he sees as his greatest achievement as a teacher.
He is also helping to ensure Aboriginal culture and language is passed onto future generations by teaching Wiradjuri to the students with Aunty Esther Cutmore and is heavily involved with the Aboriginal Education Consultative Group through his work with the school.
Albert hopes to see more kids taking up sport, less anti-social behaviour and to further educate Cowra’s children in the future.
“To eradicate the drug and anti-social behaviour of a small minority of our community and to ensure that every child in Cowra is provided with the best opportunities to fulfill their dreams.”
