Mr Berg also leads discussions about consequences of being involved in motor vehicle accidents at the PCYC’s Traffic Offenders Intervention Program.
As a junior he boxed at a national level in his home country of Norway before moving to Australia and beginning coaching boxing at the Cowra PCYC.
He’s only one of many volunteers who dedicate their time to the town’s PCYC.
Mr Berg said he tries to teach young boxers to share and enjoy the success of their peers.
“I try to teach them to build each other up,” Mr Berg said.
“I just enjoy it. It’s really good for physical and metal health. It’s definitely something I’d recommend for young people.
“For such a small town there’s many talents.”
Cowra PCYC manager Stewart Mead explained the importance of volunteers.

“Volunteers help our funds go further so we can make a bigger difference for each dollar we spend,” Mr Mead said.
“Volunteers help us to build and maintain our community assets so that the town as a whole benefits from having a great sporting program or place for young people to grow, develop and take small risks.
“Examples of this include young people refereeing adult competitions in touch football, basketball or volleyball. The adults have the opportunity of playing sport but the bigger benefit is having the young people who step forward to develop judgement and confidence under pressure.”
PCYC volunteers help run activities like boxing, assist with administration, help run events like discos or debutante balls, fundraise and help with general maintenance around the club.
At the moment the club has a number of projects under way with more in the pipeline and is seeking volunteers to assist with reestablishing a junior basketball competition, hosting live music on Saturday’s at the Young Road building and hosting a debutante ball in October.
I just enjoy it. It’s really good for physical and metal health. It’s definitely something I’d recommend for young people.

The club is on the look out for a president and officeholders to form an advisory committee that will help drive the success of Cowra’s PCYC into the future. An annual general meeting is set for June 26 at the Cowra Services Club.
Manager Stewart Mead explained that funds generated through the PCYC’s activities are used by the club’s youth case managers who work with young offenders and youth at risk.
“We have a small window of opportunity to make a difference and help young people on a pathway to employment and a positive life,” he said.
