It’s all part of Cowra Council’s cemetery extension project, which has now been completed on time and on budget, creating approximately 3,500 grave sites and lengthening the cemetery’s service by another 35 years.
“Cowra Council has a much respected cemetery within regional NSW and our staff take great pride in its maintenance,” Cowra Council General Manager, Paul Devery said after the completion of the new work.
“In order to maintain the facility to a very high standard, a four year project plan was put in place in 2014 to extend the cemetery to the east, starting with notification to the lease holders that the Council owned land would be utilised,” Mr Devery said.
“In 2015, the planting of close to 160 memorial trees took place to ensure they were well established when it came time to open the new section of the cemetery,” Manager of Cowra Services, Chris Cannard said.
Some of the features of the cemetery extension include space for memorial sites to place ashes in tree lined gardens, landscaped areas including a rotunda as a place for reflection, sealed roads and toilet facilities.
“The new section of the Cowra cemetery will open when the current cemetery has reached full capacity, which is now estimated to be at the end of 2018,” Mr Cannard said.
“Council is very pleased to report that the extension has been completed within budget in the projected four year timeframe, and we will continue to provide Cowra residents with a quality, respectful facility to service the needs of the community,” Mr Devery said.
