Rounds were held in Kurri Kurri, Undera, Mildura and Gillman between January 6 and January 14, with a couple of Cowra riders involved in the action.
Brady Kurtz, 2016 Australian champion, scored heavily in the heats of each round, but didn’t capitalise on the four A finals which proved to be crucial.
An exclusion in the final at Kurri Kurri and a controversial exclusion at Undera left him with no points from his hard-fought run to the A final.
Extra points in the A final proved to be the turning point at the last and final round at Gillman Speedway in Adelaide on Sunday night.
Newcastle’s Rohan Tungate and Brady were tied on 45 points a piece going into the fourth and final round at South Australia.
The pair still couldn’t be split after the heats, both finishing on 14 points, leaving the championship to be decided on one race, the A final.
Unfortunately Brady badly missed the start and was unable to recover which handed Rohan the championship.
“Tungate just got the better of me in the final and was a deserving winner,” Kurtz said.
“For me, after finishing a disappointing seventh last season, almost being the champion this year was a great turn around.”
Second place gives Kurtz a chance to again contest the 2018 GP qualifiers for the 2019 World GP Speedway series.
Brady will be returning to the UK in late February to commence his 2018 season competing at the top level in three countries each week – Poole Pirates in the UK, Vetlanda in Sweden and Leszno in Poland.
Cowra’s Matt Gilmore, 17, made his debut in the 2018 series but found the step up competing with some of the top Australian internationals very challenging. An invaluable experience though.
Brady will be racing at the new speedway track at Woodstock Park Speedway on Saturday, February 10.
Brady will captain the “Woody Woodpeckers” team against the “GM Australia” team headed by newly crowned 2018 Australian Speedway champion, Rohan Tungate.
Racing commences at 2.30pm with Junior 125cc support following by the teams meeting commencing around 4.30pm.
