A 33-year-old Cowra man has been sentenced to an eight-month jail term with a non-parole period of three months at Cowra Local Court, Wednesday January 10.

James Barry Dawson was before the court charged with stalk and intimidate intending fear and physical harm and contravening an AVO.
Dawson was also charged with stealing from his victim for which he received a one-month fixed jail term, both sentences were backdated to when he was first taken in to custody.
According to police facts around 3.30pm on Sunday October 15, 2017, Dawson and his victim were at a hotel on Redfern Street taking part in a pool competition.
Dawson followed the victim from the hotel around 6.55pm, passing under the Cowra bridge and continuing along Lachlan Street. He was yelling threats at the victim, who then called a friend on their mobile.
As the phone was at the victims ear, Dawson took it and threw it down a nearby stormwater drain. The victim then went to Cowra Police Station followed by Dawson who was yelling obscenities. He was then arrested.
Dawson’s solicitor, Geoff Casey, said both his client and the victim had been drinking during the day and Dawson had no recollection of threatening the victim or throwing their phone down a drain.
In sentencing Dawson Magistrate Imad Abdul-Karim said the community does not tolerate domestic violence and that the community expectation was that someone committing those offences would go to jail.
Failed to appear
A 43-year-old Parkes woman has been fined $450 and disqualified from driving for six months in her absence at Cowra Local Court on Wednesday, January 10.
Patricia Ann Hurkins of Gap Street Parkes, failed to appear before the court charged with driving a motor vehicle with an illicit drug present in her blood.
According to police facts around 2.33pm on Sunday October 8, 2017, Hurkins was stopped on the Mid Western Highway for the purpose of a random breath test and drug test.
Her breath test returned a negative reading, while her oral fluid test returned positive to meth. Hurkins was then taken to a random breath test bus for a secondary oral fluid test, which also produced a positive reading to meth.
In relation to her drug taking Hurkins said she had, “smoked ice in a pipe on Friday night”.
