Commencing this week, the Morongla Show Society Inc are holding their 18th Annual Sheep Dog Trials at Morongla Showground with six competitors travelling all the way from Western Australia.
Show organiser David Langfield said the WA competitors were on the circuit which culminates with the Supreme Championships to be held at Seymour, Victoria at the start of October.
Before making their way to Seymour the WA contingent will join handlers at the picturesque Morongla showground which is located 15km south of Cowra on the Lachlan Valley Way.
The Morongla trials will be held over four days from Thursday August 17 to Sunday August 20, 2017.
More than 200 dogs will compete in various divisions throughout the four day event which commences at 7am each morning.
The divisions, Encourage, Novice, Improver and Open cater for all dogs with the Encourage specifically for beginners.
Dogs are able to take out three Encourage trials before they have to progress to the other classes.
Mr Langfield says a good handler is a person with a lot of patience with their dog.
“A handler really has to be very patient to work the dog.
“They need to be able to read what the sheep are trying to do and guide the dog the right way,” he said.
A really good sheep dog can be worth more than $5000, he said, adding that with “a few trial wins they can be worth more for breeding purposes”.
Entry for spectators is free and canteen facilities available during the day.
