“Behind the Wire” a diverse collection of precious Cowra POW camp artifacts and objects including memorabilia, and photographs and “Dream of Ghosts”, an installation by artist Stephen Copland were both launched on the night. Cowra Mayor, Councillor Bill West officially opened “Behind the Wire”, saying he hopes future generations will continue to commemorate the events of August 5, 1944.
“I wonder what they will say in 73 years time? Whether we will still remember the events that have made Cowra so special and so unique,” Cr West said.
“I wonder if those who were part of it in August 1944… if they ever envisaged that we would continue to keep the legacy alive. It is so very important.”
