The Blue Heelers were undermanned, and Grenfell took advantage, dominating the early exchanges.
Although, after repelling a number of Goannas raids, Cargo opened the scoring through Tyrell Charters. Duncan Young’s conversion made it 6-nil, but a converted Mana Aditagane try pulled Grenfell back.
After that, Grenfell dominated the first half, running in three more converted tries – to Josh Edwards, skipper Phil Ingram and Mitch Stevens – to lead 24-6 at half-time.
The battered Blue Heelers did lift in the second half, taking it to the Goannas. Cargo scored through Matty Fuller, Young converted, to make it 24-12 but then the goalkicker was sin-binned.
The Heelers held Grenfell out though, then scored to make it 24-16 and when Grenfell’s Brenden Hewen was binned the Blue Heelers had more than a sniff with eight minutes to go.
But, Grenfell held on, scoring late through Sam Ingram to secure a 28-16 win. Cargo stays in third, while the Goannas move into the five.
