Graduate Nurse Program - Ward based

Ashford Hospital

Ashford Hospital has a Graduate Nurse Program which is designed to assist Graduate Nurses in their Transition to Professional Practice.

This program is available to newly registered, Registered & Enrolled Nurses and it aims to:

  • Assist and provide support to Graduates in their initial transition from Student to practice novice Nurse
  • Assist the Graduate in consolidating their knowledge, clinical practice, leadership, communication and teamwork skills in a supportive and flexible learning environment that is responsive to their needs
  • Assessment is based on the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) Competency Standards

Objective of Ashford Hospital Graduate Nurse Program

At the completion of the program, the Graduate will have consolidated their knowledge and met their responsibilities as a first level practitioner and be ready to move on to the advanced beginner level of knowledge and skill.

About the Graduate Nurse Program

Ashford Hospital's Graduate Nurse Program is a 46 weeks clinical program based on full time employment, commencing in February/March each year. Mid-year intakes or employment outside of this identified time frame may be considered on an individual and workplace need basis.

The Graduate Nurse Program includes

  • Hospital & program orientation
  • Unit orientation for each clinical rotation
  • Professional development study days with a strong clinical focus
  • Access to an online professional development education tool
  • Varying clinical experiences with unit rotations based on staffing requirements.

The Graduate Nurse Program provides support to Graduate Nurses in the form of

  • On-site Graduate Nurse Coordinator, Clinical Educators, Clinical Managers and Clinical Nurses/Preceptors
  • Ongoing peer support from Nurses working in the clinical areas
  • Performance review:
  • Formal - Performance Appraisals
  • Informal - Ongoing verbal feedback

Two Program Streams

The Ward based Program includes 2 x 6 month rotations within the ward settings (ie. Medical, Surgical, Oncology, Cardiac, Emergency, Critical Care).

The Perioperative Program includes rotations through Scrub/Scout, Anaesthetics and Recovery.

The number of Graduate positions offered each year will be dependent on the staffing requirements. All positions are permanent contracts and may be offered as part time or full time positions (must work a minimum of .8 FTE).

Selection Criteria

  • Eligibility for registration as a nurse with the Nurses and Midwives board (AHPRA)
  • South Australian DHS Working with Children clearance
  • Compliance with ACQSHC National Standards
  • Graduate within 2021-2022
  • Flexible to undertake Full Time or Part Time employment on a 7-day rotating roster
  • High-level of interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Works well within a team
  • Overseas students must have documented proof of English Language skills to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic Band 7 or evidence of a booking for an IELTS test at the time of interview (OET test will also be accepted)

How to Apply

  • Write a one-page cover letter stating why you want to work at Ashford Private Hospital, identifying areas of interest and past experience
  • Include a CV with at least three references - Two referees must be clinical staff or facilitators that you have worked with during your 3rd year placements. The 3rd referee must be from your current or recent employment
  • Provide most recent academic transcript with result legend (official or unofficial accepted)
  • Include copies of 2 most recent clinical placement reports - including relevant (acute surgical/mental health/rehab or perioperative) university clinical appraisals completed by you and your facilitator at clinical placements.
