Hundreds of students, staff and families gathered at the school’s hall, with numerous awards being handed out on the day
Cowra High School Principal, Mr Charles Gauci, said while 2017 would “hold many happy and proud memories”, he also took the opportunity to hold a minute’s silence for late teacher Paul Smith.
“The passing of Mr Paul Smith had and continues to have a lasting impact on all of us,” Mr Gauci said.
“But the outpouring of support and the heartfelt grief at the time indicated that it was his life to be a part of Cowra High and the wider community that will have the most enduring and significant impact on our community.”
Mr Gauci said it was a time of reflection for the school after students took part in plenty of activities throughout the year.
“In 2017, the school conducted 77 non-sporting excursions, including student leadership training… numerous debating, dance, history and drama events all over the state,” he said.
“We’ve had 56 sporting events including swimming, football, rugby, rugby league, netball, hockey, futsal to name just a few.
“Cowra High School students contributed to 22 community events.. with our students readily providing assistance at the primary school carnival and gala days, representing the school in Anzac, Breakout and Australia Day community events.”
In the sporting arena, the Hilton Shield went to Noah Ryan, the TW Plummer Award for Sportsmanship went to Jade Te Weehi and numerous representative teams were acknowledged for their achievements across a wide range of sports.
The Hutchinson Cup for Premier House went to Myall, Sportsman of the Year went to Sam Long and Sportswoman of the Year went to Lucy Wilson. Sam and Lucy were also the recipients of the Long Tan awards.
The 2016 Dux went to Maddison Johnson and the Patricia Fagan Scholarship was awarded to Meggan Ellison on the night of the Year 12 graduation.
The presentation day also featured a number of performances, including a drama item by Victoria King and Iesha Reed, musical items by the school band and Hope Martin-Edgar performed her HSC piece “Someone in the Crowd”.
