“They’re a really great bunch of people and they do awesome things,” Ms Alberry said of the group.
This week Ms Alberry, who works at Cowra Shire Council, signed up to take part in the 2018 New York Marathon for White Ribbon.
White Ribbon’s focus is primary prevention – stopping violence before it occurs, by challenging the deeply ingrained attitudes, social norms and power inequalities that give rise to men’s violence against women and gender inequality.
In September Ms Alberry walked part of the Larapinta Trail for White Ribbon, completing 80km of the 223 trek in five days and raising $4000 for the group.
Ms Alberry plans on returning to the Northern Territory next winter to walk the Larapinta Trail in its entirety before hopefully jetting of to New York for one of the world’s most iconic marathons, a mere 42km walk in the park compared with the 223km of the Larapinta Trail.
The 2018 New York Marathon will be held on November 4 but before jetting off Ms Alberry has to raise $10,000 for White Ribbon.
She raised $4000 for the group before doing part of the Larapinta Trail this year and is looking for corporate sponsors to help her raise the $10,000 needed to take part in the marathon.
Already the Cowra Health Club has jumped on board with a $500 sponsorship as has a Sydney based medico.
Ms Alberry is interested in hearing from any businesses or individuals wishing to help her make the trip.
Of the challenge of completing the 42.195km run Ms Alberry said “I’m just going to give it a go, if my body doesn’t like it I’ll walk”.
“I don’t have to run it but I'll be giving it a shot,” Ms Alberry said.
