Cowra Veterinary Centre was very excited to once again run the high jump for dogs at the 2017 Cowra Show – the number of entrants increased from last year and so did the heights jumped.

We ran two classes – one for junior handlers (under 16 years old) and an open class.
Prizes included cash, pig’s ears chew treats and bags of dog food from Cowra Veterinary Centre.
In the junior handler class, 12-year-old Eoghan Killick managed to get his stumpy tail kelpie Fred to clear 1.7 metres for second place.
Eleven-year-olds Abby and Lexi went a bit higher with their borrowed kelpie Penny, clearing 1.9 metres for first place.
The open class drew seven entrants – five border collies, one kelpie and one Irish Wolfhound Great Dane cross.
The bar started at 1.2 metres high and the dogs went jump for jump in a very close contest.
Hannah Barber’s young Irish Wolfhound Great Dane cross named Theo never quite got the hang of it and finished in 7th place.
Adelaide Ford’s 5-year-old border collie Jazzy cleared 1.7 metres and finished 6th.
Kylie Adams’ collie named Chopper made it over 1.8 metres, tying with Scott Catlin’s 2-year-old border collie named Lexi in 4th/5th place.
Second and third place both cleared 1.9 metres so a countback was needed to decide the placings – third place went to Darren Adams’ 6-year-old New Zealand border collie Mark, while second place went to Kylie Adams’ other collie named Bomber.
First place went to Stuart Hudson’s three-year-old kelpie named Doc.
Doc ended up clearing 2.2 metres so was a clear winner.
It was lucky that we extended the height of the jump since last year’s contest as Doc was flying high!
Last year saw Melissa Jasprizza’s 6 year old red cattle dog Sam jump 2m to take first place ahead of Emma Sutton’s 7 year old kelpie Penny who cleared 1.9 metres.
Thanks to all the entrants for bringing their dogs along to compete and thanks to the big crowd of enthusiastic spectators for coming to support the Cowra Show in its new weekend timeslot.
We would also like to thank announcer Chris Groves for keeping the crowd informed and entertained between jumps.
Hope to see you all again next year!
