Cahill was booked for a further ride onboard Dubbo galloper Tips And Beers from the yard of Michael Lunn however the gelding was scratched.
Mal Nero is aiming for for a fourth win in her 31st start for trainer Cameron Crockett and is coming off three nice runs at Mudgee, Wellington and Dubbo this campaign.
All three resulted in third place finishes with Cahill riding the latter two.
Cahill will back up at Coonamble on Sunday linking with NSW Racing cult hero Stoneyrise in the $25,000 Crystal Sprint (1200m).
Coonamble has been something of a happy hunting ground for Stoneyrise, with his remarkable rise starting with a win in a Class 2 event on the corresponding program one year ago.
Ironically, it was Mathew Cahill that was in the saddle on that day.
“When I won on him at Coonamble last year he picked them up and won pretty easily,” Cahill said.
“Then a few months later I remember seeing him go past me in the heat of the Country Championships, and his run in the final wasn’t too bad either so obviously he improved a fair bit even from the last time I rode him.
“I’ve spoken to James and he’s happy with how the horse is, so hopefully he can do it again on Sunday. We’re on the minimum weight and even though he’ll probably get back a little bit he’ll do no work from barrier one.”
