Nicholls was presented the major award and the Adult Vounteer of The Year award at Bathurst RSL Club on Thursday afternoon, as a token of thanks for the amount of work he’s done for the game at a local level in Cowra and beyond at a Western Zone level.
Last season alone, Nicholls clocked almost 5000 driving kilometres while fulfilling his work as a volunteer.
“I did about 5000km last season. That’s including meetings and everything,” Greg Nicholls said.
“The first month of October last season I spent three weekends travelling to and from Dubbo.”
Nicholls initially was recognised by Western Zone Cricket before being awarded the Regional Sporting Spirit Volunteer Award during National Volunteers Week during May.
Sport and Recreation Development Officer Joanne Barrett then put up his nomination for the Central West Volunteer of The Year with recommendations from western region based Cricket NSW Development Officers Matt Tabbernor and Matt Ellis.
“Greg gives numerous hours of his own time to cricket and travels all over NSW to ensure that players in the Western Zone can compete in numerous country Championships,” Ms Barrett wrote in the nomination form.
“He is always the first person with his hand up to help out when needed.
“He would be a worthy winner of this award and it would be great recognition for his service to cricket in Cowra and the western region.”
Nicholls, who works at Cowra’s Martins Electrical, said he needed to thank his boss Keith Martin for allowing him to attend to his cricket commitments.
“I’m lucky that I’m in the business that I’m in,” Nicholls said.
“A lot of bosses wouldn’t let you have the time off. He’s very understanding.”
Ms Barrett referred to Nicholls in the nomination as a “very humble man” and someone who avoids the “limelight”.
“You don’t do it for the awards. But it’s nice to be recognised,” he said.
