Montgomery tore a calf muscle during his side’s round four clash against Bathurst Bulldogs and aggravated the injury at training as he closed in on a return about a month ago.
He’s made two appearances off the bench in Cowra’s latest games against Bathurst Bulldogs and Orange Emus, but he’s a confirmed starter in the number 12 jersey at Mudgee this Saturday.
“There’s nothing worse than sitting on the sideline when you want to be out there, particularly when you watch your side lose games,” Jeremy Montgomery said.
“The idea is for me to be more of a battering ram in the backs. Against some of the better sides in recent weeks we’ve had no go forward and we ended up running sideways.
“It’s unfortunate because I love being in the forwards,” he said with a laugh.
“But I’ll be looking to punch some holes from the back, create some go forward and speed so we can get the ball to our blokes out wide.”
Cowra’s looking to inflict their second defeat upon Mudgee this season having stormed home and secured a 30-17 win at the Eagles’ Nest in round six.
Last week, the Wombats slipped to the bottom of the ladder after suffering a 55-13 loss against Forbes while CSU Bathurst beat Parkes.
Montgomery says the Eagles will be looking to make an immediate impact at Jubilee Oval this week.
“They haven’t done a lot lately. We’ll be looking to put as many points on them as possible early and put the game to rest.
“If we take them lightly we may not walk away with the result we want.”
With Orange City hosting top three side Forbes and Parkes away to fourth placed Bulldogs it’s a big chance for Cowra to leapfrog City, who are two points clear in fifth.
“We’re fairly optimistic at this stage,” Montgomery said of playing finals.
“Basically we just need to win every game from here which is going to be a tough ask seeing as though we play Forbes and Roos. But those two games are at home so we’ll have that as an advantage.”
The Eagles finish their season with games against Forbes at home, CSU Bathurst away and Dubbo Roos at home.
Cowra takes on Mudgee from 3.15pm this Saturday.
