On top of that, more than a dozen more unregistered firearms are taken to a dealer and registered each week.

Sergeant Michael Fleming has been pleased with the response.

He said it’s mostly old firearms being surrendered.

“Since the amnesty we could take up to 10 firearms a week. This includes unregistered, unlicensed and unlawful firearms,” he said.

“It’s good that it’s working.”

Licensed firearms dealer Cowboy Guns and Gear’s Jessie-Lea Hovey said they take at least three guns a day to be registered.

The most one person’s come in with is six.

“A lot of people are coming in and we also get a lot of phone calls. Most people have licences and they haven’t been doing anything wrong so they just bring them in and get the guns registered and take them back home,” she said.

“It’s quite a simple process it takes no time at all as long as they have a licence. Anyone who is unlicensed just surrenders them.

“That’s the pleasure of the amnesty it’s a good way to get rid of them with no questions asked. We also have a lot of people inquire but we don’t see them again.

“Some people think they’re a mint. I don’t think we’ve registered a gun that’s worth more than $300.”

 From 2010 to 2015 the amount of firearms in Cowra spiked by 25 per cent to 4372, according to figures obtained at the time by the Greens under freedom of information laws.

Jessie-Lea Hovey expects to see that figure climb, and encourages people to continue making use of the gun amnesty.

“I didn’t expect so many people coming in because some people think ‘I can’t be bothered’,” she said.

“Unfortunately, if they don’t, that’s their risk because once the amnesty is over I know there’s big penalties in place.

“I’m sure there’s a lot more out there who aren’t doing anything about it.”

Penalties for unregistered or banned firearms can attract fines of up to $280,000 and even jail terms.

The national firearms amnesty ends on September 30.
