When alleged drug mule Cassie Sainsbury was first charged with attempting to leave Columbia with a suitcase containing more than 5kg of cocaine the initial reaction of the majority, including yours truly, was “how could she be so stupid?”.
Hadn’t she heard of Schapelle Corby or the Bali Nine?
Of course she had.
At 22 years of age Sainsbury was only 10 when Corby was convicted but unless she’s been under a rock without any access to modern technology for the past 12 years it is impossible to believe she hadn’t heard of either case.
So, armed with this prior knowledge, how could she be so stupid?
The answer could be quite simple, Sainsbury may just be a gullible young lady caught up in a world of deception.
Alternatively she may be like so many who have gone before her and thinks everyone else is stupid.
I’m not a big fan of tabloid television but I just had to watch on Sunday when her boyfriend decided to tell his side of the story.
“I know there are many unanswered questions” he told reporters.
That’s one thing he said that we can all believe.
Here’s just two questions I’d like to throw his and Cassie’s way.
Who doesn’t notice that the said headphones at the centre of this case weigh in excess of 5kg?
What type of cleaning company sends employee’s to Columbia to meet clients?
And finally, if you think 5kg isn’t a lot, next time you’re at the supermarket, pick up and carry a 5kg bag of potatoes around the store for a while and then tell me you wouldn’t question the extra weight and investigate what was behind it.
Confused?
If you’re a little confused over the Sainsbury story try and get your head around school funding at the moment.
In one corner we have a set of figures that indicate schools are going to be hundreds of thousands of dollars worse off under the new Gonski.
In the other corner we have a set of figures that suggest the schools are actually seeing an increase in funding.
Lies, damn lies, and statistics. The truth probably lies someone in the middle.
