The round six Blowes Clothing Cup match looms as a golden chance for the Eagles to get runs on the board, facing off against the Mudgee Wombats who are also yet to score a win in 2017.
Cowra are coming off a five point loss at the hands of Dubbo Rhinos last week, a game coach Troy Hayes said his side should have won.
He agreed this week’s clash is a big opportunity for the Eagles – and an important one.
“It’s a massive chance really. We should have won last week. A few things didn’t go our way, all the 50-50 stuff we missed out on,” he said.
“You always want to play hard at home. Opening our account would be really good for us.
“It’s a good chance for the boys to put on a bit of a show.”
Confidence is lacking in the Eagles camp.
Five losses in a row has put a dent in the hard work the side has done throughout preseason and at the end of 2016.
Hayes has recognised his troops need a boost.
“It’s about getting that confidence back that we had at the start of the season and had built at the end of last season.
“It’s dropped off a bit. We built again last weekend but couldn’t get the result.
“When you’re not winning you find those 50-50 calls seem to go the other way,” he said.
Hayes has put an emphasis on staying focused in an effort to get the Eagles’ season underway and momentum back in their favour.
“We have a talented side,” he said.
“We need to stay focused. Sticking to our game plan and staying focused is what we need to do.”
He expects a tough task from Mudgee but is confident his side will get their first win of the year.
“Every team is going to be competitive. Last weekend we probably went in thinking it was going to be easier than it was.
“They have a long trip. But it’ll be tough, they’ll turn up to play.”
The Eagles host the Wombats from 3.15pm this Saturday.
The main game caps off a bumper day of rugby at the Cowra Rugby Grounds.
The under 13s Cowra and Canowindra side will begin proceedings in the morning before the women’s side play, colts, seconds and then first grade.
It’s also ladies’ day, tickets are $16.50.
In other Blowes Clothing Cup action this week, Emus take on CSU, Parkes meet Bathurst, Roos and Rhinos do battle and Forbes face Orange City.
