Cowra’s Sportsperson of the Year committee has announced former Olympic swimmer Lisa Curry as its guest speaker for the 2016-2017 awards presentation night.

Curry is a three-time Olympian having competed at the Moscow (1980), Los Angeles (1984) and Barcelona Games.
Her career spanned 23 years and also included two World Championships and three Commonwealth Games.
Courtesy of her achievements and service to sports, Curry received an MBE in 1982 , OAM in 1994 and was inducted into Australia’s Sport Hall of Fame in 1985.
Since retiring from swimming, Curry has had success with the Australian canoe team which she coached and competed with.
Curry comes highly recommended as a motivational speaker. This year’s awards presentation will be hosted by the Cowra Services Club on Saturday, July 15.
Meanwhile, the committee is still calling for nominations for this year’s Bob Barr Memorial award for services to sport.
Last year’s winner was Peter Garlick for his years of service to Cowra Rugby League and Cowra cricket club Valleys.
A number of teams have also been discussed and are in the running to take out the town’s team of the year.
Cowra’s women’s rugby union side won the 2016 Central West Women’s competition, the Cowra Blues took out the Central West AFL flag and the men’s Senior Soccer Club won the Bathurst District Football second grade premiership.
The 2015-2016 Cowra Sportsperson of the Year Matthew Gilmore is again in the running and looks like a strong candidate to go back-to-back while several athletes covering a range of sports are looking to pick up this year’s prize.

The contenders cover a range of sports including rugby union, motorcycle racing, soccer, triathlon, boxing, cricket, swimming, hockey and water skiing.
