The weekend started on Saturday with a coaching day held by legend and 10 times Aussie Speedway Champion, Leigh Adams assisted by Mick Holder.
The riders then put the tips to good use on Sunday for the Easter Gold Cup. Sunday’s racing commenced with the Junior 125’s. Local star Moz Brown showed them he was no push over and scored wins in all his heats giving him a 15 points maximum and a direct ticket to the final along with Cordell Rogerson (12 points) and Tom Drane (12 points). Aiden Phillips won the semi-final to join these riders in the final.
In the final Moz Brown rocketed to the lead from start to finish to keep his unbeaten record in tack followed by Kurri Kurri’s Aiden Phillips in second.
The Easter Bunny made a special appearance at lunchtime, firstly doing a few quick laps around the track before being swamped with kids looking to enjoy one of his many Easter Eggs.
The big boys hit the tract on the 500cc speedway machines. Drama struck for Cowra’s Matt Gilmore in his last heat when he was excluded by the referee for causing the stoppage in his race when he was deemed to have hit another rider, Kerian Sproule causing him to fall.
Luckily Gilmore had enough points to get him into the final alongside Mildura rider Cooper Riordan who went in undefeated on a maximum 15 points and Kurri Kurri rider Alan McDonald making up the third rider.
Pressure was on Cowra ace Ben Cook to deliver the goods and he did just that leading earning himself a place in the final.
When the tapes went up for the start it was Victorian Cooper Riordan who jumped to the front with Ben Cook and Alan McDonald fighting it out in the middle. Matt Gilmore went too wide in the first corner disappearing off the side of the track, but up front it was all Cooper Riordan and that was the way it stayed with Riordan taking out the 2017 Easter Gold Cup.
It was a great day with a big crowd.
