In pursuit of the Sri Lankan High Commissioner’s XI score of 162, the Cowra Mayoral XI required two runs off the last ball but managed just a single, with the Sri Lankan fieldsman at mid-on throwing the stumps down.
It was a thrilling end to an exciting finish as Cowra’s captain Mick Curtale blasted 44 not out in the final five overs, catapulting his side from 8-110 after 25 overs.
Cowra needed 15 runs to win in the last over with Curtale and Scott Gray at the crease.
Gray knocked a single off the first ball to get Curtale on strike who settled for two on the second ball before blasting a six on third ball to make it six runs to win.
The fourth and fifth ball went for two respectively before the run out on the last, Gray unable to scamper back for a double.
Earlier, Ethan Gray starred with the ball registering figures of 5-21 off four overs, while Tom Thuaux and Isaac McFarland also picked up multiple wickets.
Sri Lanka scored more than five-runs an over on their way to 162, all out in the 30th over.
With the bat, Brendan Traves scored 44 at first drop, Peter Guthrie (20) and Jackson Moodie (18) added valuable contributions.
This was the fifth installment of the now annual cricket match played as part of the Festival of International Understanding celebrations.
The event became an annual fixture from 2013, when Sri Lanka was the town’s host nation, played on the weekend of the Festival of International Understanding.
Having won the corresponding match last year, Cowra retained the Cup but Sri Lankan ensured they’ll be back in 2018 to continue the association between the two sides.
