Mortimer, who has been playing halfback for the Sharks’ feeder club Newtown, was ruled out of the Jets’ round three Intrust Super Premiership NSW clash against Illawarra last weekend after injuring his knee.
He’s expected to be out until at least round nine, after starting the season well in the Jets’ No.7 jersey.
Mortimer scored in the 20th minute of Newtown’s 16-14 round one victory over Blacktown Workers and also provided invaluable attacking flair in his side’s 46-28 loss to Mounties the week after.
The injury setback isn’t a welcome one for Mortimer, who was fighting to force his way into Cronulla’s top side after rookie rake Jayden Brailey was named as the Sharks’ first choice hooker at the start of the season.
