Cowra Shire Council has revealed plans to produce an electronic and print history covering the last 30 years of the town and district.
The new work will compliment “Cowra on the Lachlan” which was published in 1988.
The 1988 book was basically a series of essays contributed by local authors on local history, sports, community groups, villages, churches, and local government.
Council general manager Paul Devery said the work would cover the economic, social, cultural and physical changes to Cowra in the past 30 years.
Whilst a hard copy of the work is planned Mr Devery said “it is imperative that any new work be available in the most readily accessible formats”.
Mr Devery said it is important the work was accessible for use as a research tool by school and university students, academics, history buffs and anyone with a general interest in Cowra.
“There are a number of ways to achieve this objective,” Mr Devery said, citing making an electronic version available through Apple iBooks and Google Books.
Council is in the process of appointing an editorial committee to oversee the project.
Councillor Ruth Fagan said she is pleased to see the project progressing.
“We’ve discussed this over a number of years,” Cr Fagan said.
Council will vote on a recommendation at its meeting on Monday, March 17 whether to establish a Cowra History Book committee under section 355 of the Local Government Act comprising of two councillors, the general manager, council’s public relations officer, council’s grants and executive projects officer and two community members.
If appointed the Cowra History Book committee will be delegated the following functions:
(i) To appoint a Managing Editor for the project subject to the allocation of funding by Council (ii) To oversee and direct the Managing Editor in all aspects relating to delivery of the project.
