“We’ve had plenty of teams ring up to be involved, but the props division, they’re all ringing up asking how much fun it’ll be,” Wright said.

“We’ve got four or five teams in that 100-kilo-plus division and I think the physios will be kept pretty busy. There’s going to be a lot of tape.”

The first edition of the Dubbo-run event will kick-off at 10am on Saturday, with a bumper field including the Hamilton Hawks, the premiers from the strong Newcastle competition, heading to Caltex Park for the sevens challenge.

The Hawks have multiple teams in the open men’s division, while NSW Fiji will also be an outfit worth watching.

Wright says with multiple 10s titles in the region throughout the pre-season – Cowra has just hosted its 10s competition while Orange City’s invitational tournament is next weekend – it seemed the logical direction to design a sevens competition around both.

The interest explosion in the sevens game only adds further merit to the idea.

“It’s a real global game, sevens,” Wright said, 12 teams competing in the open competition.

“As a prop, I prefer 10s, but with the way it’s going and the interest from girls in sevens rugby, it’s something we thought would be really good for the whole of central west.

“It’s definitely something we’d love to be an annual event.”

Sids Rams and the Blobfish, a side incorporating players from Orange clubs Emus and City, will kick-off the action on field one.

On field two, the Buncha Turkeys and Roos Colts line-up in game one.

Both begin at 10am. 

Sides from Hornsby and the Riverina are also in the draw.

The women’s draw kicks off with the Hornsby Rugby Club women’s sevens side taking on Walan Migays playing from 10.40am.
