We were thrilled and surprised to be nominated and win the 2017 Community Group of the Year Award and very proud to be alongside other community groups, who also do their best to make Cowra a better place to live.
All these groups help each other wherever and whenever possible, and this networking and sharing of skills is very special for all of us.
Cowra is blessed to have so many wonderful organisations and volunteers that lend a hand, just take a look at the number listed in the 2016-2017 Community & Business Guide.
It is truly amazing, there are so many, and they all continue to make Cowra a stronger community by working together.
Whether its sports, youth programs, recreational activities, hospital auxiliary, schools, early childhood groups, support groups, community type services or associations/groups, their aim is to improve on what is already being done in our community.
The Cowra Food Hall is a small community group, and its strength lies in the many keen and enthusiastic volunteers who give their time freely each week, the wonderful clients who are always willing to lend a hand, make an improvement suggestion and let us know when we have it wrong, the assistance from other organisations and groups and the donations of excess food and household items from Woolworths, Aldi, Coles, Discount Daves and many others.
There are so many who help us, far too many to list, so please accept our thanks for your kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity and assistance, and know we are grateful and most appreciative.
All at the Food Hall believe volunteering is a valuable community resource that enables improvements in our community life but we certainly don’t seek rewards, and we trust that another worthy organisation will have this honour next year.
Thank you so much for recognising the work of the Food Hall and congratulations to all Australia Day Award nominees and winners and also to all who volunteer in any way, what we all do, makes Cowra a better place to live.
Kind regards
Margaret Pengilly, Kathryn Tindall, Kim Withers and all Cowra Uniting Church Food Hall Volunteers
Shine a light on Epilepsy
Throughout March, communities around the world are dedicated to raising awareness of epilepsy, culminating in Purple Day on March 26 (International Epilepsy Awareness Day). During this time, people wear purple and hold events to raise funds and awareness of the condition that will affect more than 800,000 Australians in their lifetime, and 50 million people worldwide.
Sadly, due to social stigma and misconceptions, many people with epilepsy do not disclose their condition and live in fear of being ‘found out’. This Purple Day, Epilepsy Action Australia would like to encourage communities to shine a light on epilepsy by lighting up purple a local landmark and raising funds for community education services to better the lives of those affected.
Interventions by Epilepsy Action Australia can help increase understanding in our communities, such as epilepsy awareness sessions, seizure first-aid training, and the Online Academy, which offers several courses about epilepsy for parents, carers, schools and healthcare professionals.
I would encourage your community to support Purple Day during March by simply making a donation or getting involved (www.epilepsy.org.au). Please help shine a light on epilepsy this Purple Day and put your region on the map.
