With my husband and another couple, looking at two weeks in Sicily in August. Staying in villas with day trips to explore. Where do you suggest and which cities to visit? M. Cecchini, Strathmore
Two weeks is ideal for Sicily, August is not. It's scorchingly hot in Sicily and much of the island is packed with visitors from the paler parts of Europe. Prices are higher and cafes and restaurants crowded.

Leave your visit until mid-September if you can and you'll have a far quieter Sicily.
You need a car, trains and buses are not an option.
Your first villa might be somewhere in the south-east of Sicily, allowing you to explore such delightful cities as Ragusa, Syracuse, Modica and Noto.
Next, somewhere in the west towards the historic gem of Erice with a stop at Agrigento en route, followed by a few days in Palermo itself, and don't miss the city's fascinating markets, La Vucciria and Ballaro, its astonishing churches such as the Oratorio di San Lorenzo and the Chiesa di Santa Cita, the wonderful art gallery and archaeological museum and the stupendous 12th-century Norman cathedral of Monreale.
Finally a few days in the north-east to visit Taormina and possibly a trip up Etna if you're feeling adventurous.
With two weeks you could also explore the Aeolian Islands and if so the best place to stay would be Lipari, with day trips to visit Vulcano and the amazing volcanic hump of Stromboli.
