Over the past six months this team of eight local Martial Artists have been competing in qualifying tournaments in Dubbo, Sydney and the Australian Capital Territory with the aim of qualifying, firstly, for the NSW State Championships with the aim then making to the AMAC Australian Championships and possibly a spot on the AMAC Australian Squad which will compete overseas in 2017.
The Cowra Dojo NSW State Titles team consisted of Sensei Amanda Cass, Sempai Sho Aeryc Sansum, Kohai Jessica Hayes, Kohai Charli Hubber, Kohai Darby Hubber, Kohai Tobie Hubber, Kohai Reagan Newham, Kohai Misty Williams.
Locally based KRMAS Dojo Instructor Shidoin David Simpson was very pleased with the success of the team at the NSW State Championships.
“I have been teaching, competing and coaching competitors for over 10 years and it is always a joy to see a group such as these students excel in their chosen sport. These students have shown great dedication to their training and have competed with respect for their fellow competitors and referees. It is great to see them having a chance to test their abilities on a larger stage.”
The events to be contested at the Championships include Forms (or Kata), Point Sparring, Full Contact Sparring, Junior Sumo and Sword Sparring events.
The Cowra Dojo was represented in each of these events in various age and experience categories.
When asked for his opinion on how the locals will fare at the upcoming Australian Championships Shidoin David replied: “each member of the team has already faced some fierce competition to reach this stage. They are dedicated to their martial arts and to their training. There is no reason why they should not be expected to medal at that event and possibly even be considered for the Australian Team. Four of the team (Sensei Amanda, and Kohai’s Charli, Darby and Tobie) are already members of the 2016 Australian Squad and will be competing in New Zealand in early November.”
In conclusion Shidoin David also expressed his thanks to the dedicated parents of these competitors who make it possible for them to attend events such as these Championships.
“Without the support of parents our junior athletes just cannot hope to attend and experience such competitions.”
