A Sudanese family living in Cowra has paid their final mortgage payment, marking the first Habitat For Humanity home to be owned outright in NSW.

Directors from Habitat For Humanity Australia, an international not-for-profit which assists people obtain homes, congratulated the new home owners – Yagoub Karmal, Hawa Mandi and daughter Nahid Komi – at their house on Courallie Street on Saturday, September 24.
Mayor Bill West and Councillor Ray Walsh were present to offer their good wishes, along with close to 80 people including 35 from NSW’s Sudanese community.
Cowra’s Family Church sponsors the family in partnership with Habitat For Humanity.
“It was a special time, to come from such dire situations and come here and now own a home,” founder of Cowra Family Church David LeLeivre said.
“I think Habitat has been going for 15 years in NSW and this is the first home to be paid off.
“It really is great. We have two other Habitat houses in Cowra and they’re in the process of paying off their mortgages.”
Habitat directors paid respect to the Cowra family after a finger food lunch was enjoyed.
