For this to happen the Relay For Life committee is calling on Cowra residents to volunteer to help organise the 2017 event happening on the weekend of March 25 and 26, as the community comes together to remember loved ones, celebrate survival and fight back against cancer.
Volunteers are needed to help recruit participants, assist with fundraising, promote the event, secure cash and in-kind sponsorship, involve and support cancer survivors & carers, organise entertainment, activities, great food, and special ceremonies.
Katherine Hodges, Community Relations Coordinator Cancer Council NSW, highlights the immense value that volunteers bring to this event:
“Volunteers are the key to bringing together Relay For Life in the Cowra community,” Ms Hodges said.
“Many hands make light work, and you can be involved in anything from planning and organising the event elements in the lead up, to assisting on the day.
“By volunteering you’ll be doing your bit to ensure that Cowra’s Relay For Life is something really special for all those affected by cancer in your community.”
Relay For Life is the world’s largest movement in the fight against cancer.
The event enables community members to give back in honour of their own personal cancer journey by walking or running continuous laps of a track as part of a relay team of 10–15 people.
In 2016 and 2017, Relay For Life hopes to raise $6.9million through events across NSW.
In 2014 Cowra and District Relay For Life raised $45,841, and since the inaugural event in 2006 has raised a massive $298,866.
In 2017, the Cowra and District Relay For Life hopes to raise a total of $60,000.
Relay For Life fundraising helps Cancer Council NSW fund vital cancer research that will improve treatment and diagnosis for cancer patients in Cowra and across Australia.
It also provides funds for support programs that connect patients and carers around the country as well as advocacy initiatives and prevention programs that help reduce the risk of cancer.
