The storm season officially began this month and runs through to the end of April 2016. Although severe storms can occur any time of the year they are more prevalent during this period.
During the past twelve months, volunteers in Central West Region responded to over 696 storm callouts, volunteering over 3,286 hours to assist the community.
NSW SES Central West Region Controller, Craig Ronan had some timely pre-season training tips,
"Getting ready now, will give you peace of mind later when the storms hit. It's that simple," said Craig Ronan
And like any good coach he has a program mapped out to get results:
1. Know your risk - start with a quick warm up by thinking about the area you live in and the types of disasters that could affect you. Are you affected by flooding? Go to www.floodsafe.com.au and enter your postcode to get local flood information
2. Plan for what you will do - make a game plan at www.seshomeemergencyplan.com.au for what you will do if a storm affects your area
3. Get your home ready - put some muscle into maintaining your property by cleaning your gutters, trimming your branches and securing any items in your backyard. Don't forget to put together a home emergency kit and check your insurance is up to date. See www.stormsafe.com.au or www.nrma.com.au/ses for all the good tips!
4. Be aware - stay tuned for updates by listening to your local radio station, checking the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website www.bom.gov.au or visiting the NSW SES Facebook page www.facebook.com/NSW.SES
5. Look out for each other - play like a team and share information with your family, friends, neighbours and those who may need assistance
Jennifer Cobley, Manager Partnerships and Programs, from NRMA Insurance, the Principal Partner of the NSW SES, says,
"Every year we see the effects that storms have on our community. In a typical year almost half of all home claims in NSW result from storms. The storm events in April this year saw this increase to over 75 per cent of all home claims." said Ms. Cobley.
"We encourage communities to Get Ready for storm season by taking simple steps to prepare their homes. A little work now can protect lives and help prevent damage to properties," she added.
