From a list of submitted names, Cr Ray Walsh was quick at last week's meeting to move that the council "acknowledge the majority of support and favour for the name, the Gooloogong bridge".
The bridge name had been the subject of a very public call to be named in the memory of Gooloogong Cowboys player Garry "Desert Fox" Smith, who died in an accident last month.
However, alongside this online petition was the submission of a dozen other names too, honouring local residents.
Cr Bruce Miller, speaking in support of Cr Walsh's motion, stressed Council wanted to thank "everyone who took the time to write and be part of this process".
"We don't want to pick one particular name, and have any worthy person miss out," Cr Miller explained about the decision.
His words were echoed as Cr Ian Brown.
"Historically its been known as the Gooloogong bridge, as it will be now too."
Commencing in September 2013 the new $16.4 million NSW Government funded replacement to the former Holman Bridge - just north of Gooloogong - opened to traffic in February 2015.
The project replaced an existing timber truss bridge built in 1904, with a new 252 metre-long bridge, funded as part of the Bridges for the Bush program.
The new bridge is a wider, safer bridge across the Lachlan River designed to improve road freight productivity in the region and to provide access to other roads across regional NSW.
The original timber bridge was built in 1904 and whilst historical records are not conclusive, it would appear the bridge was named "Holman Bridge" after William Holman, a report to Council revealed.
William Holman was elected as the Member for Grenfell in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1898.
He became deputy-leader of the Labor Party in 1905, and at the 1907 election he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for the seat of Cootamundra.
In 1910 Holman was appointed NSW Attorney General and became Premier in 1913 finally losing office in 1920.
Following construction of the new bridge the newly formed Gooloogong Progress and Promotion Association sought to have a new name selected for the new bridge.
NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) as the owner requested Cowra Council manage the public consultation process and recommended a name for the bridge
In total, nine formal nominations were received by mail, email and over the front counter to Council's formal submission call. This number, however, included a collective submission from the Gooloogong Progress and Promotion Association.
