The mural was painted in the early 1950s by residents of the Cowra Migrant Camp to thank Clarence "Snow" Ticehurst for the support he and his family showed the new Australians.

Snow was a teacher at Cowra High School from 1947-1973, and in the late 40s and early 50s taught migrants English.

Professor Bill Ticehurst proudly remembers his father, and the support he showed for his students, both at the high school, and at the camp.

"The people at the camp were looking for roots," he said.

"He provided that by forming bonds with them and their families."

The school teacher was well known for his commitment and patience with students.

"My father taught the less capable students, he mentored them and showed them much needed support," Bill said.

"He would help them into the workforce after school, and point them in the right direction."

The migrants also painted a portrait of a kookaburra for the family, and made them a telephone table.

"The table was very different for its time," Bill said.

"They just didn't make furniture like that here."

Bill remembers the migrants bringing a lot of positive change to Cowra.

"The quality of the artisans who came to town was as great if not greater than those already available," he said.

"It really was a mutually beneficial meeting of different cultures.

"They had a cultural richness they brought with them, which included art, food and wine."

Snow accepted the migrants into his home faster than many people around town.

"A lot of people in Cowra didn't know where Latvia or Estonia were, and Germans were evil Nazi people."

In spite of the general perception Snow continued to welcome the foreigners to his dinner table, and into his life.

"I am thankful for that because it gave me a better world view," Bill said.

The mark of thanks from the migrants is still evident on the wall of the Redfern Street home.

"It is a bit damaged, I damaged it when I was a child, I was having some water pistol practice and got Snow White's dress.

The kookaburra painting and telephone table are also still in use in the home.

Cowra was home to more than 17,000 migrants whilst the camp was in operation.
