"Everything came to a head," he said.

"If I could have got hold of a needle or a gun I would have done it."

Steve would like to see a support group started to give people affected by cancer somewhere to go when they need to talk.

"I am happy to get the ball rolling," he said.

"I have spoken to three other people going through chemotherapy at the moment and they were interested too.

"I don't think I am the only one who has felt this way and who could use some support."

Without his companion animal, Meggs, Steve says he would have "done something stupid".

"He's my best mate, and he is wonderful company.

"He knows when I am not well, he puts his head on my stomach and sits with me for longer in the morning.

"I can talk to him all day, but the problem is he doesn't talk back."

Steve says he has a very supportive family, but because they don't live close he doesn't have access to their support every time he is feeling off-colour after chemo.

"My ex-wife and I are very good friends but she lives in Orange," he said.

"And my daughter lives in Newcastle; it would be good to have a support system in Cowra."

Steve is proposing a fortnightly support group.

"Maybe one of the churches could provide their hall for an hour or so a fortnight."

Steve says he would be happy to organise the first meeting and then form a committee so that the group can grow.

"If they can't get on to me they can leave a message and I will ring them back, but please don't send text messages."

Steve has stage-four cancer and says that for him severe depression is a key side effect to his chemotherapy.

There is currently a breast cancer support group in Cowra, however Steve says this support group will be all inclusive, including all cancer types- and anyone affected by them ie friends and family of the patient.
