We started high school when Elvis Presley's "Are you lonesome tonight" was number one in the top Forty and left school with Normie Rowe's "Que Sera, Sera" on top.
In between times we had the ongoing debate and votes on who was the best, Elvis or the Beatles (not to forget the Stones).
Duffle coats, bell bottom pants and body shirts were the go. Girls wore their hair loose and long, whilst boys went from crew cut to beatle cut.
Who could forget the school dances at the old lyric hall (the one that burnt down). We did the twist, the limbo and the Thredbo slop with varying degrees of success.
TV wasn't a thing until we were in second year at high school and for the majority of us, even much later, but we still had the serials at the Savoy theatre each Saturday arvo. Bandstand became a must see for those with TV's.
President Kennedy was doing his thing in the USA whilst the cultural cringe and Robert Menzies were still alive and well in Australia.
We were the last of the old Intermediate and Leaving certificate days with the Wyndham scheme coming in, in 1962.
Playgrounds were carefully segregated.
We paid for things with pounds, shillings and pence until the 14th Feb 1966.
Average pocket money was 2 shillings and 6 pence.
We lived in a time of the cold war and enormous social changes but living in Cowra and surrounds we were left pretty much untouched by what was going on around us.
