"The town of Cowra plays an important role in the current close relationship between Japan and Australia," announced an official Embassy of Japan statement late last week and released by Cowra Shire Council.
"Our bilateral relationship would not have been possible without the strenuous effort and contributions of the people and local government of Cowra.
"Seventy years ago, a great tragedy took place in Cowra in which 235 Japanese and Australian people lost their lives by a mass escape of Japanese prisoners.
"Since then, various monuments, such as the Japanese Cemetery, the Japanese Garden, Cherry Tree Avenue and the World Peace Bell have been built to symbolise the spirit of reconciliation between Japan and Australia. The people of Cowra have significantly contributed to the reconciliation of our two countries.
"Last year marked the 70th anniversary of the historic tragedy.
"Thanks to the members of the Cowra Breakout 70th Anniversary Committee, commemorative events marking the anniversary were a huge success. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr Fumio Kishida truly appreciates the effort and contributions made by Committee members who have assisted in the further strengthening of our countries' relationship.
"And so, on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Ambassador Sumio Kusaka is honoured to present the members of the Cowra Breakout 70th Anniversary Committee with a Citation."
This presentation will be held at 10:45 am on Wednesday, August 5, at the Cowra Japanese Garden.
